Broiler Meat Safety

About the Project

Built on our extensive previous research, we have found that in-feed supplementation of select GRAS-status phytochemicals reduce significant populations of Salmonella and Campylobacter in chickens by modulating key virulence factors critical for pathogen colonization in poultry. Therefore, as a logical next step, we need to validate the efficacy of these in-feed phytochemical treatments for reducing Salmonella and Campylobacter colonization in chickens under field conditions in a commercial field setting. Moreover, we need to ascertain that the treatments do not adversely affect production parameters under field conditions. Poultry drinking water is another important route of antimicrobial administration to birds that is easy to adopt, and the dosage can be regulated and monitored. Built on our preliminary research, we will also test the efficacy of in-water supplementation of nanoemulsions for reducing the pathogens in chickens. Nanoemulsions improve the solubility of phytochemicals, facilitate efficient delivery through water, and increase the antimicrobial efficacy.
